Food for children in the summer months

Today was the first distribution for the Windsor Food Bank’s innovative Supplemental Summer Food Program.  Because Windsor does not have the federal Summer Food Service Program, which provides lunches in the summer to children who get a free lunch during the school year, the great volunteers in Windsor have devised their own unique program.

Working through the school system, the Windsor Food Bank invited families whose children get free lunch at school to sign up for special food distributions during the summer.  Every two weeks, the families can come for an extra pick-up of food.  For the second year, Foodshare is partnering with them to provide bags of mixed produce to go in those food packages.  These packages will provide 55 families with non-perishable foods, fresh produce, and breads.

Below you will find a picture of the great folks from Permatex volunteering their time to pack the bags for this program.
