Today when I made it into Foodshare, after a tour of several Turkey and Thirty drive sites, I heard a message on my voice mail that was left last evening. In it, a family of six from West Hartford was asking for some help to have a traditional Thanksgiving dinner this year. The caller described a tough year financially and asked for some help.
Sadly, I don't know if we will be able to help this family or not. Our goal of 19,000 turkeys is a real number, the sum of all the people who signed up in advance at local food pantries across the region. And when we closed up last night, we were only a little over halfway toward the goal.
If we don't hit the goal, we will be cutting back on how many turkeys we can give to the pantries who are picking up Monday and Tuesday, and they will have to turn away some of the people who signed up in advance.
If we do hit the goal, and that's a big if at this point, we may be able to help some people, like this family, who missed the sign up deadline.

Just wanted to let people know that we were able to help this family, through the generosity of the Windsor Food Bank, who had extra turkeys and reached out to help.
