Last year, the Plainville Hunger Action Team started the town's first summer meal program at Norton Park. This program provides meals to children who receive a free lunch during the school year. In the summer of 2012, the program served an average of 70 lunches per day. For the upcoming summer the group is looking at adding breakfast and, with strong promotion and outreach by the schools and community, hope to serve even more children in need.
The Plainville Hunger Action Team also worked closely with Jim Bondi, Food Service Director for the Plainville Schools, as he launched the system's first ever breakfast program. Jim recently won the State’s 2013 “Director of the Year” by the School Nutrition Association of Connecticut. The Hunger Action Team will continue to work with Jim and Dr. Maureen Brummett, Assistant Superintendent of Schools, to increase student participation in the breakfast program.
To learn more about school breakfast, please consider coming to the Connecticut School Breakfast Summit on April 26 at Rentschler Field in East Hartford.
