A New York Times editorial this week begins with a quote from Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY): “Families who are living in poverty did not spend this nation into debt, and we should not be trying to balance the budget on their backs.”
While there are record numbers of people receiving SNAP benefits, it's astounding that some politicians have chosen to demonize those people who need help to feed their families, rather than recognizing that it's the economy!
Cutting SNAP is wrong for both moral and economic reasons and so Senator Gillibrand has offered an amendment to the version of the Farm Bill proposed by the Senate Agriculture Committee which would cut $4.1 billion dollars from SNAP. Senator Gillibrand's amendment would fully restore those funds to SNAP. Please contact your Senators today and ask them to co-sponsor the Gillibrand amendment!
