ONE-THIRD OF SENATORS CALL FOR FULL SNAP FUNDING

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) is leading one-third of her Senate colleagues in calling for full funding of SNAP in addition to restoring proposed cuts. The Senate Agriculture Committee is poised to move ahead with legislation, which would cut an estimated $4.1 billion from the program over the next decade. Gillibrand is a member of the committee. “Families who are living in poverty, who are just trying to figure out how to keep the lights on and put food on the table – they did not spend this nation into debt, Gillibrand said. And we should not be trying to balance the budget on their backs.” Children make up more than half of all SNAP recipients, she noted. Seniors and military families in large numbers also rely on the benefits.
