Role at Foodshare: As a Community Network Builder, I will be facilitating the development of local Hunger Action Teams that foster Foodshare’s goals of changing the conversation about hunger while developing solutions both simple and systemic to address the root causes of hunger.
How long have you been with Foodshare? 3 whole weeks!
Hobbies: Travel, Yoga, Pilates, Hiking, Cycling, Farmer’s Markets, Cooking, Reading, Movies and Politics
Why I do what I do: I love the concept of a grassroots movement that brings together a broad-based coalition of local stakeholders to start the initial conversations about why people are hungry in their community. Long-term we can help create communities that share the vision of real societal change. My job also feeds my passion about promoting healthy nutrition as a critical component of alleviating hunger.
Most recent accomplishment: Graduation from the Encore! Hartford UConn Nonprofit Leadership Program in June 2013 and being immediately hired by Foodshare.
A personal/professional goal: Travel to the Galapagos Islands and Machu Picchu in South America.
Last read: Half The Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn
What one word would you use to describe yourself? Passionate
What are you most proud of? My volunteer work including 25 years of greyhound rescue and education about this very special breed and seeing the joy that the dogs bring to the families who adopt them.
Share something about yourself that few people know: I got to meet and spend the evening with the great blues guitarist John Lee Hooker at his home in Berkeley, CA when I was in college! There were only 10 students at his apartment and he talked about his life and played amazing music for us.
What is your favorite drink? Why? Coffee because the smell and taste of a hot cup of fresh brewed coffee, especially on a cold morning, is my favorite way to start the day.
What is your favorite movie, book or song? Book: The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. It takes me back to my roots in the San Joaquin Valley of California where I was born and raised.
What would I find in your refrigerator right now? Fresh local produce purchased from the Farmer’s Market, turkey and veggie burgers with lots of condiments including fresh salsa and jalapeno peppers.
Anne Frank once said that in spite of everything, she believed people were basically good. Do you agree or disagree? Why? I agree since my personal philosophy centers on the real hope that compassion and education will mitigate and eventually overcome hatred and intolerance.
