USDA operates 15 food and nutrition assistance programs aimed at reducing food insecurity. Over 70% of its total 2012 outlays went to these programs, which assisted about 1 in 4 Americans in fiscal 2012. In order to operate these programs effectively, USDA must continually monitor food security. Among its recent findings: the prevalence of food insecurity has not changed much since 2008; one in five households with children were affected by food insecurity in 2012; and the prevalence of food insecurity ranged widely across the country, from 8.7% percent in North Dakota to 20.9% in Mississippi.
