A recent USDA study found that nutrition education programs helped children increase their daily intake of fresh fruits and vegetables at home by a quarter to a third cup and helped seniors consume a half cup more of fruits and vegetables a day. Children were more likely to select low-fat or fat free milk. Two of the programs studied provided in-school nutrition education, activities and take-home materials for low-income elementary school children; a third program provided low-income seniors with nutrition education, as well as take-home and other materials. The study shows that nutrition education associated with nutrition programs like SNAP can get participants to try, buy, and eat healthier foods.
