Jill sent me this message about her experience:
"The forecast for today was for clear and cold, and, boy, were they right! We went to the Wethersfield site first; it was 9 degrees when we arrived. Shortly after we pulled up, a line began to form. Lest you think that people cease being hungry just because it’s cold outside, that was not the case in Wethersfield. Nor, for that matter, at any of the sites we went to today. Seventy-four people came through the Wethersfield site, which normally numbers around 100. With offerings of cabbage, potatoes, bread, cottage cheese, apples and greens, people quickly moved through the line, thanked the volunteers and hurried to get out of the cold.
"At Glastonbury, our second stop, again it was a measly 10 degrees, but a long line of 92 people moved around the truck, as volunteers helped to set up, take down, direct traffic and of course load food into the opened grocery bags of some very grateful people. Many 'Happy New Year’s' were shared along the way.
"Our last stop in Newington was the warm spot of the day…..16 whole degrees! Again, a line formed as we arrived and 49 people left with overflowing bags of groceries.
"Foodshare has committed to providing the Mobile Foodshare trucks to so many communities, in fair and not-so-fair weather; to see the impact on the community is a stark reminder of what hunger really looks like."
