SCHOOL MEALS BOOST ATTENDANCE

In 2012, only 58% of elementary school students in Schenectady, New York attended school 90% of the time. This year, 91% of students are attending 90% of the time. The middle and high schools are also seeing similar attendance increases. School officials attribute this increase to the decision to offer free school meals to all students. Board President Cathy Lewis said the free meals are playing an important role in getting kids to school. Tardiness has been significantly reduced as well.
