Using data in the work to end hunger

At last week's Windsor Hunger Action Team meeting, the Foodshare team presented research done by a student intern.  Felicia Cordeiro is a student at Central Connecticut State University and interned for the fall semester with Foodshare's Community Involvement team, which includes our Hunger Action Team work.

Using census data about income, the Hunger Action Team had already found that the Windsor Food and Fuel Bank is only serving about one-third of the town's residents whose incomes are low enough to suggest they might be in need.  Felicia analyzed data from both the census and the Health Equity Alliance and showed the team maps of Windsor's neighborhoods to help us identify through both income and health indicators where unmet needs in the town might be.

Felicia's analysis identifeid two neighborhoods - Windsor Center and Wilson - where needs are likely higher.  The Windsor Mobile Foodshare site is located in the Center, but there are no services in the Wilson neighborhood, so the Hunger Action Team is going to evaluate how they might partner with existing resources in that neighborhood to ensure that people's food needs are met.
