HOUSE BEGINS MEALS ON WHEELS REAUTHORIZATION
The House Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Training has begun that chamber’s process of reauthorizing the Older Americans Act, the law that funds Meals on Wheels. The Senate approved reauthorization last year. As she opened a hearing on the matter, Subcommittee chairwoman Virginia Foxx cautioned that it will be difficult to effectively meet the needs of the rapidly growing senior population – especially amid current fiscal constraints. Census projections estimate the number of Americans age 65 and over will increase from 40 million in 2010 to 72 million in 2030. This means that, for the next 19 years, roughly 10,000 Baby Boomers will turn 65 every day.
