MOST SNAP RECIPIENTS ARE WORKING AGE

For the first time, working-age people make up the majority of Americans relying on food stamps—a major shift from a few years ago when children and elderly people made up the bulk of SNAP recipients. According to the Census Bureau, more than 50% of U.S. households now receiving food stamps are headed by someone between the ages of 18 and 59, that’s up from 44% in 1998. The program is increasingly covering the middle class. Today, 28% of SNAP households are headed by a person with at least some college training, up from 8% in 1980.
