STATE OF HUNGER IN AMERICA


As President Obama delivered his l State of the Union address, Feeding America issued its annual “State of Hunger in America,” assessing the prevalence of food insecurity and the availability of public and private food assistance. Here are some of its findings:

·    49 million people live in homes that are food insecure

·    20% of households with children and nine% of elderly people living alone are food insecure

·    76% of SNAP households include a child, a senior, or someone who is disabled

·    91% of benefits go to households with income at or below the poverty line

·    1 in 8 Americans annually rely on assistance from Feeding America food banks.
