Volunteers harvest vegetables

Chef Chris and his daughter Sydney
It was a picture perfect day at South Windsor’s Varney Farm on Saturday August 16th where 30 volunteers picked over 1,400 lbs. of eggplant, bell peppers, zucchini, yellow squash and “Patty Pan” squash for delivery to Foodshare’s Regional Market location. Varney Farm has 4 acres dedicated to growing fresh produce for Foodshare. Vernon Hunger Action Team member “Chef Chris” Avtges answered the call for volunteers and brought his entire family. Chris, the Food Service Director for the Vernon Public Schools, brings his passion for healthy food to the entire Vernon community.

Please contact Bea Maslowski if you are interested in starting a Hunger Action Team in South Windsor, or joining an existing Hunger Action Team.

Volunteers are needed on Saturdays at Varney Farm throughout the garden season ending September 20th. If you are interested in organizing a team or want to participate as an individual to help with the harvesting, or any other type of volunteering, please contact Edna Bailey or by calling (860) 286-9999 x126.
