The number of food insecure households in the United States
remained unchanged between 2012 and 2013, according to a report just issued by
the U.S. Department of Agriculture. According to the report, Household
Food Security in the United States in 2013, 14.3 percent of households
experienced food insecurity during 2013 (food insecurity simply means not being
sure where the next meal is coming from). Twenty-one percent of children lived
in food insecure homes, and 9 percent of seniors suffered from food
insecurity. All those numbers are essentially unchanged from the previous
year. Other parts of the economy are doing well—the stock market jumped nearly
30 percent in 2013—but clearly economic change is not happening at the lower
end of the scale.
