SNAP PARTICIPATION GROWS IN NEW ENGLAND SUBURBS
Nearly two million people in the
towns surrounding New England’s major cities struggle with low or barely
sufficient incomes, and one in four families rely on SNAP, according to a
report by the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. Those living in poverty in New
England’s suburbs don’t have the same access to safety net programs and support
services as those living in urban areas. The report looked at families living
in poverty (incomes under $24,000 a year for a family of four) as well as those
earning $40,000 or $50,000 a year, and are struggling with high housing, child
care, and commuting costs.
