Together We Can Solve Hunger

There aren’t many students who have had their art presented in the state Capitol and received an official citation from their state representative by the age of 18, but on October 23 there were 7 of them. These seven students, along with thirteen other finalists of this year’s Voices Against Hunger contest, were being honored in the Award Ceremony held in the north lobby of the Capitol. Most of the participating students attended, along with their proud families and friends. State Representatives Angel Arce (Hartford) and Bill Aman (South Windsor) awarded students citations from their respective districts – Rep. David Baram (Bloomfield) was unable to attend, but he had his office deliver citations for students from his district, and they were presented to the students by Vice President and C.O.O. Christine O’Rourke.

This year’s theme was “Together We Can Solve Hunger,” and we received entries from all ages of students from around the Greater Hartford area. Participating schools/programs included Philip R. Smith Elementary School in South Windsor, Metropolitan Learning Center in Bloomfield, Artists Collective in Hartford, Congregation Beth Israel in West Hartford, and St. Christopher School in East Hartford. The winners of the contest each received a certificate, along with a full-size poster of their original artwork and $50 Target gift card. The students weren’t the only winners: the two teachers with the most participating students each received a $25 gift card.

As in past years, we were astounded by the talent of some of these students. Through painting, drawing, filmmaking and writing, students as young as eight years old conveyed both an understanding of hunger and the passion for wanting to make a difference.

“We were especially impressed with the quality of the submissions this year,” said O’Rourke to the students. “I’ve been with Foodshare for a lot of years, and I was deeply moved by the artwork and writing you submitted. You reminded me of why I keep doing this work.”
