MINIMAL MINIMUM WAGE YIELDS GREATER GENDER GAP

States with lower minimum wages tend to have a greater gap in pay between men and women, according to a new National Women’s Law Center analysis based on federal data. Of the 10 states with the widest wage gaps between men and women, eight set their wage level at the federal minimum of $7.25 per hour. Meanwhile, just three of the 10 states with the smallest wage gap set their minimum at $7.25. Women earned at least 25% less than a man in a comparable job in the 10 worst states for the gender wage gap. But even among the 10 states with the smallest wage gap, the average discrepancy for pay among men and women was still about 15%.
