TEXT MESSAGES HELP PEOPLE KEEP SNAP BENEFITS

Each month about 1,000 San Francisco residents receiving SNAP lose their benefits because they haven’t updated their paperwork. Residents must fill out forms twice a year to maintain their benefits, but sometimes the forms arrive late, and other times recipients overlook them. Now SNAP participants can sign up for an app, called “Promptly,” which sends them a text message before their paperwork is due. About 1,000 SNAP recipients have signed up for the app, which seems to be working – early tests show a 50% response rate, which is higher than postal mail or email, according to the mayor’s office.
