New record set for food donations in 2013
2013 was an amazing year for food donations to Foodshare! The organization distributed 14,062,995 pounds of food, a full 17% incease over the prior year!
This is enough food to provide about 12 million meals to people in need here in the Hartford area and everyone who was part of this effort should be proud of themselves!
Even more important, in my mind, is the continued improvement in the quality and nutritional value of the food that Foodshare distributed. 11.1 million pounds of the food distributed was donated, with the balance coming from government programs or purchasing. Of the donations, 6.5 million pounds was fresh fruits and vegetables and nearly 800,000 pounds was meat!
