Foodshare’s SNAP Outreach program staff announced on August
18 that they had already surpassed 2013’s year-end total for the number of
people submitting SNAP applications. SNAP, formerly called Food Stamps, has the
capacity to deliver six times as much food as Foodshare can distribute, and
increasing the number of people receiving those benefits is a crucial part of
solving hunger in greater Hartford.
Foodshare’s outreach program is unusual in
that it relies on trained volunteers to help people fill out the complex
application form. Those volunteers go into communities to work with clients,
which removes the need for people to travel to a Department of Social Services
office to submit their application. Between application help and simplifying
logistics, the program helps reduce the two biggest hurdles for people applying
for SNAP benefits.
You can help even more people this year by signing up to volunteer with our SNAP Outreach program.
